Creation Series

Carrie Swim holds the sacred telling of creation found in the beginning of the Torah with site-specific lyrical abstract works made for an exhibition at Art Museum TX in Houston. She creates twelve mixed media pieces and four large scale acrylic and oil paintings for an installation in the museum space.

Carrie explores this scripture by diving into her paint with, hand and feet planted in soil and grass.

Her work provides an atmosphere for viewers to experience creativity at its core. She explores the relationship between creativity and life itself in order to open the door for community members to explore what can be possible with their resources within.

“Breathe” speaks through the void of time and space into new wonders of love and hope.

What if, when we entered a day, we could not only feel the grass beneath our feet, but also see a landscape of breath that fills all creation? What if breath had color and form?

Creation Series

These eight foot paintings were created through Carrie Swim covering her body in paint and activating the space with her movement onto the canvas before her.

She performed this same technique live with the first darker piece, “Above the Deep.” This was done in collaboration with En Tiempo Ensemble dancers and choreographer Charity Johnson.

Strength Series 2020

Strength Series Introduction

The Strength Series

Despite what the world may say about strength in its many ways, this series searches out the meaning of strength in twelve paintings that seek strength in the place of quiet stillness, listening to the source of life itself.

All of these paintings began in acrylic paint and dance with Carrie’s body painting technique. They were then bound to the canvas with an acrylic gesso to become a safe bridge and recipient of a new layer Carrie’s lyrical abstract oil painting.

Roots Series

In the Roots series, Carrie Swim explores the roots of her ethnic heritage in Ireland and Germany, and the roots of her spiritual heritage in Israel. These combined sacred experiences influence the color, form, and movement within her work. Lines enter her work as a means of “grounding,” connecting with the soil and all things tangible to all five senses. Her painterly forms and regions of color connect to the spirit within and beyond the tangible world to the etherial. She explores the technicality of connecting drawing and painting together within the same surface area as a door to bring in the pondered dialog between heaven and earth.

Lyrical Abstraction Series

The “In the Garden” Series

Carrie explores the truth of life, connecting self to the divine and to the fruits of the earth during her three year living experience nestled in the beautiful farms of Kansas while she pursued her MFA at Kansas University.
